Health Science Clinical Faculty Pool – HS Clinical Instructor or HS Assistant Clinical Professor – School of Optometry
The School of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley (optometry.berkeley.edu) invites applications for a pool of qualified health science clinical instructors to teach in the School of Optometry and/or UCBSO partner off campus clinics should an opening arise. The pool will remain in place for one calendar year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the School of Optometry. Positions may range from 20% to 100% time.
The responsibilities of the health science clinical instructors include teaching optometry students in the patient care environment on or off the UC Berkeley campus or teaching optometry students the basics of eye examinations sequence in the pre-clinical environment. They may also perform service to the school and community through education or various outreach programs on or off the UC Berkeley campus. The School of Optometry has excellent clinical facilities and a large, diverse patient population. Over 85,000 patients are seen annually. About 65 optometry students are graduated annually.
At the time of application candidates must have an OD degree from an Accreditation Council on Optometric Education accredited institution. Candidates must be licensed in the State of California by the start date and maintain active licensure throughout their term of employment. Residency training and Clinical teaching experience are preferred but not required. The level of appointment will be determined by the experience of the applicant. Salary is commensurate with experience. To be eligible to work, clinic employees must comply with all UC Berkeley Optometry Clinic annual immunization and medical screening requirements, trainings, and University and School policies.
Applications should include a CV and brief statement related to the educational and teaching experience of the applicant. Applicants may also include a cover letter and a 2-3 page statement on your contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including information about your understanding of the issues, your record of activities to date, and your specific plans and goals for advancing equity and inclusion if hired as a Berkeley faculty member (for additional information go to https://ofew.berkeley.edu/recruitment/contributions-diversity). Applicants must apply online at the following link: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF01905.
Candidates should provide the contact information for at least three, but not more than five references at the time of application. Letters of reference will only be solicited for finalists. All letters submitted will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e. dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality (http://apo.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html) prior to submitting their letters.
Applications will be accepted and reviewed for department needs, through November 28, 2019. Appointments for fall semester are usually reviewed in May, and for spring semester in November (if applicable). The pool will close on November 28, 2019; if you would like to remain in the pool after that time you will need to submit a new application.
