Health Science Clinical Faculty Pool – HS Clinical Instructor or HS Assistant Clinical Professor – School of Optometry

The School of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified health science clinical instructors to teach in the School of Optometry should an opening arise. The pool will remain in place for two calendar years; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the School of Optometry. Positions may range from 20% to 100% time.

The responsibilities of the health science clinical instructors include teaching optometry students in the patient care environment or teaching optometry students the basics of the eye examinations sequence in the pre-clinical environment. The School of Optometry has excellent clinical facilities and a large, diverse patient population. Over 85,000 patients are seen annually. About 65 optometry students are graduated annually.

At the time of application candidates must have an OD degree from an ACOE accredited institution and be licensed in the State of California. Residency training and Clinical teaching experience are preferred but not required. The level of appointment will be determined by the experience of the applicant. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The School of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified opticians or optometrists to teach in the School of Optometry’s eyewear dispensary. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the School of Optometry. Positions may range from 20% to 100% time and salary is commensurate with experience.

The applicants we seek will be highly proficient and experienced in all aspects of dispensary operations, and capable of providing effective guidance and instruction to our students. Comprehensive knowledge of ophthalmic frame and lens materials and processes, as well as the ability to provide and demonstrate the highest caliber of customer service are skills essential to this position, who will be working directly with patients as well as supervising the training and efforts of our doctoral students. The successful applicant will prepare and deliver seminars on a variety of relevant topics in concert with other instructors.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application): either 1) a Doctor of Optometry degree or equivalent degree or 2) an undergraduate degree, plus American Board of Opticianry certificate, and at least ten years of practice experience in a dispensing environment.

Additional Qualifications (by start date): a history of success in clinical teaching experience or experience in training optical professionals. We are seeking a person who has availability 1-2 days per week, Friday plus one other day.

Preferred Qualifications: a clear demonstration of excellence in all areas of dispensary operations, as well as the ability to pass those abilities on to others.
