BAOC-UCBSO Optometric Extern/Mentor Doctor Program
On behalf of the Bay Area Optometric Council (BAOC) in cooperation with the Optometric Societies of Alameda Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Redwood Empire and Santa Clara and the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry (UCBSO) and its optometric student association (UCOSA), we once again thank you for your continued support and interest in shaping the future of our optometric profession.
We invite you to share your experience, knowledge and expertise in the field of Optometry as MENTOR DOCTOR. The purpose of this program is to expose the Optometric students to successful patient care and practice management skills in a variety of professional Optometric practice settings. By providing guidance, advice and the opportunity for the students to observe your practice, you will greatly enrich the student's optometric educational experiences beyond the formal training at the University of California.
There are a number of ways to mentor, including:
(1) Office Visitation and Shadowing for Optometry graduate students. Students will “shadow” you and meet with you in the office, ask questions and learn about patient care and office management. Mutually convenient times are to be arranged to meet.
(2) Clinical Grand Rounds in your office. You, as the mentor doctor, may provide clinically interesting patients that the students will observe and discuss with you. You may wish to teach and discuss or demonstrate useful, practical diagnostic and patient management skills in your delivery of high quality Optometric care.
(3) Visitation and Shadowing for Pre-Optometry undergraduate students at U.C. Berkeley can be arranged through Foresight PreOptometry Club and the Student Affairs Office at U.C. Berkeley.
(4) Counseling and advising U.C. Berkeley Optometry graduate students for career development and employment or practice opportunities.
We value your support and participation in these programs. Please join us in extending a hand to our future Optometrists that will ensure continued strength, vitality and leadership in our profession.
Interested doctors who want to volunteer as mentors can email baoc.rep@gmail.com to receive an enrollment participation form or by clicking on the following link: https://sites.google.com/view/baocberkeleymentorshipprogram
